9:15 Refreshments & Danish pastries

9:30-11:00 Workshop Session 1 for students and supervisors:

Between Theory and Practice: Reflecting on models of teaching and learning in doctoral supervision.
Dr David Preece

This session will explore the ways in which we (students and supervisors) have learnt in the past, and how our past experiences now influence our expectations of the supervisory process. Building on last year’s thought-provoking workshop on the pedagogy of supervision, we will consider case-studies from students and supervisors and then explore whether we should fulfil, modify or challenge expectations.

11:30 -13:00 Workshop Session 2 for students and supervisors:

Developing Guidelines for Good Practice
Professor Ian Livingstone, David Watson and Simone Apel

This session will consider the guidelines that we as a university provide for the conduct of our research degree programmes. We will examine those guidelines against national benchmarks, and use the workshop to discuss how we might improve the university’s research degrees code of practice for both students and supervisors.
